The short answer

  • Without a plan you keep: Live View (up to 10 minutes at a time), Two-Way Talk and real-time alerts [S3][S4].
  • Without a plan you lose: every recording. Ring says a subscription is required to review recorded video [S4]. There's no memory card to fall back on [S1].
  • The cheapest plan that brings recordings back is Ring Solo: $4.99/month or $49.99/year for one device [S2]. If you have several Ring devices at one address, Ring Multi ($9.99/month or $99.99/year) covers them all [S2].

Ring's plans were renamed in 2026

Ring Home plans became Ring Protect plans in 2026. Home Basic is now Ring Solo and Home Standard is now Ring Multi. Ring says features stay the same and there's no extra charge for the change [S5]. If an old email or box mentions "Ring Home Basic", that's today's Ring Solo.

The trial and what happens when it ends

  • A free 30-day Ring Protect trial starts when you set up the doorbell, unless your address already has a plan [S2].
  • If you don't subscribe before the trial or plan ends, Ring says you lose your stored video recordings and can't get them back [S2]. Download anything you want to keep first.

Power and Wi-Fi

The doorbell runs on a built-in battery that you charge over USB-C. You can also wire it to an existing doorbell transformer (8–24 VAC, 40VA max) to keep it topped up [S1]. It uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only [S1].

Common questions

Does a Ring doorbell work without a subscription?

Yes, partly. Ring says that without a subscription you can view live video and respond to alerts as they happen, but reviewing recorded video requires a subscription [S4].

What happens to my recordings if I cancel Ring?

Ring says that if you don't subscribe before your trial or plan ends, you lose your stored recordings and they can't be recovered [S2].
