The short answer

  • With a HomeBase S380, the eufyCam S3 Pro records, alerts and detects people with no monthly fee, according to eufy [S1][S3].
  • You must have a HomeBase S380. The camera has no storage of its own and doesn't work with the older HomeBase 2 [S1].
  • eufy's paid plans are optional cloud backup, starting at $3.99/month for one device [S4].
  • We couldn't find eufy stating in writing that live view is free, so that check is marked Unverified and scores zero for now.

What works with no plan

No-plan score: 4 of 5 (1 check not confirmed in writing yet, counted as zero)

FeatureWith no planDetails and source
Live viewUnverifiedeufy's no-monthly-fee page names notifications and playback, but not live view [S3], and the S3 Pro product page doesn't say either way [S1]. We haven't found eufy saying in writing that live view is free. Unverified
Local recordingYesThe camera has no storage of its own. It records to the HomeBase S380 (HomeBase 3), which has 16GB built in and accepts a SATA hard drive up to 16TB [S1][S2]. eufy says this comes "without monthly fees" [S1].
Motion alertsYeseufy says you don't "pay a single cent more for instant notifications" [S3]. Notifications with thumbnail previews temporarily store the thumbnail in the cloud [S3].
Person detectionYeseufy lists human detection and face and body recognition as HomeBase S380 features "without additional costs" [S3]. The camera itself pairs radar with PIR motion sensing and sends Stranger, Human and Vehicle alerts [S1].
Clip history (24 hours+)Yeseufy says recordings stay local with "anytime, anywhere playback" and no monthly fee [S3]. When storage fills up, the HomeBase deletes the oldest recordings [S2].

What needs a paid plan

  • Cloud Backup, an optional off-site copy of your recordings kept on a rolling 30-day basis [S4].

What the plan costs

No plan is needed to record or play back. eufy's paid plans are only for cloud backup [S4].

Storage, in eufy's numbers

  • The HomeBase S380 has 16GB of storage that can't be removed. eufy estimates that's about 3 months of video for one camera recording 10 events a day at 20 seconds each [S2].
  • You can add a SATA hard drive or SSD of up to 16TB. Once one is connected, all recordings go to it [S2].
  • When storage is nearly full, the HomeBase deletes older recordings to make room. Mark clips you want to keep as favorites, or back them up [S2].

Things to know before you buy

  • No 24/7 recording yet. eufy says the S3 Pro records motion events, takes periodic "24/7 Snapshot" photos in between, and that 24/7 recording is "in development" [S1].
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only [S1].
  • Some data does touch the cloud. If you turn on notifications with thumbnail previews, eufy says those thumbnails are temporarily stored in the cloud [S3].
  • eufy's store also sells a "Plus Member" membership for $15.00/month that includes cloud backup [S1]. It's a store membership, not a camera plan, so it isn't in our calculator.

Common questions

Does the eufyCam S3 Pro work without a HomeBase?

No. eufy says the camera has no built-in storage and uses the HomeBase S380's storage, and that it only works with HomeBase S380 (HomeBase 3), not HomeBase 2 [S1].

How much video does the HomeBase S380 hold?

eufy estimates its 16GB of built-in storage holds about 3 months of video for one camera recording 10 events a day at 20 seconds each. You can add a SATA hard drive of up to 16TB [S2].
